F.A.Q
Here you will find common questions asked to us by players and the answers to them.
Do I really need an advisor?
For the pro player hockey is a business. Just like any business you have competition within the hockey world.
Players, owners, coaches, management and hockey agents, all make their livings based on their production whether it be on the ice or off the ice. Team placement and negotiating and entering contracts is just as important as your on ice skill. A quality advisor can help to make sure you get the best contract and protection possible and ensure you are placed in a stable situation.
Many players who decide not to seek an advisor may end up putting themselves in a situation which causes anxieties and uncertainties.
Do you advise minor hockey players?
Yes. Like any business, it is never too early to begin developing a plan. Though most of our counsel has been for players who are Minor Midget, Midget and Junior A athletes, the planning and marketing concepts we embrace are equally important at the younger age groups. It can get overwhelming in high school during your pre-draft year.
Why are some agent/family advisors free?
Too simply put it, “You get what you pay for.” Most minor, junior and college level players do not generate a salary against which a commission can be drawn for many years for an agent – and statistically, most players never will! If you are not a top player who will require an agent to negotiate with Major Junior or Pro GM’s, and if you can find an agent/advisor who has the experience, expertise and who is willing to invest dozens of hours for free to help you with your career planning, then you are very fortunate.
Our experience is that like any business, agencies need to make money to survive; therefore, agents must focus their top prospects, as well their current professional athletes. If you’re not likely to generate commission for your agent, it is unreasonable of you to expect you will receive a great deal of attention when you need it most. At our company, we invest a great deal of time to guide all our clients no matter what level they are at, each and every step of the way. That’s our job and our singular focus. When it comes time to negotiate contracts and packages at the Major Junior and Pro level, we get the job done right for all of our clients.
What is the best path to make the NHL?
All of our advisors are very knowledgeable and experienced in the transition and expectations that players will experience going from minor hockey as a recreational activity to the priorities of the business of hockey.
There is no one-size-fits all decision that exists for parents and players considering the options. The decision should never be taken lightly, each and every player is unique and should take into account the development of the player, educational considerations, maturity and personal and family considerations.
Our advisors will look at each indivdual and realistically assess the opportunities available.
What current players do you represent?
The Hockey Group represents a widerange of hockey players in various leagues around the world.
Essentially the players we represent does not matter. Players and families sometimes have a mis-conception that just because an agent has some high profile players then he is going to be the best choice to represent them. The Hockey Group represents players at all levels, whether your an NHL all-star or sixteen year old looking to play major junior. We have experience providing quality instruction, training and advise for all levels.
